New pillow

Hello all! I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend. We went out for a hike today, which was a lot of fun. I'm writing today to talk about a project I finished last weekend, but just haven't had the time to blog about yet. I ended up making a new pillow for our living room! We had 4 pillows that came with the couch, and I recently bought one from Joss and Main, but they seemed simple enough to make, so I decided to give it a go. I'm not entirely sure this was cheaper than buying a pillow (the fabric was a little pricey), but it was fun, and would definitely be cheaper if I had used a less expensive fabric.

Supplies:
1. Fabric (I ordered mine from Online Fabric Store)
2. Pillow form (mine is 20" x 20")
3. Zipper

First, I carefully measured and cut 2 squares. I added a quarter of an inch on all sides. I think I had added too much room when I was making the bench cushion, so I remedied that this time. I also used a roller cutter and a flat edge to make my cuts nice and straight, which really helped while I was sewing.

Then, I started sewing the edges together. The right sides of the fabric should be facing each other. I sewed 3 out of the 4 sides this way.

I then moved on to the zipper side. I had picked up a 20" off-white zipper from Jo Ann fabrics. In retrospect, I should have gotten an 18" one, but I made the 20" zipper work. I spent about 5 minutes figuring out the best way to sew the zipper onto the fabric. But you basically need to sew the zipper to the right side of the fabric so that the zipper's fabric is inside the pillowcase.

And that was pretty much it. After I assembled everything, I washed the pillowcase and ironed it flat.

Here's the new pillow with the Joss and Main pillow. I really should have fluffed up the couch before this photo, but you get the idea. The fabric actually goes really well with our furniture and decor in the living room, so I am quite pleased.

And this is totally random, but I recently found a Kinder egg in a local bakery. Technically, these things aren't legal in the US (see news story here). So, I was quite shocked to find one. It sat in our house for a while until I decided I really wanted to eat it.

And guess what I found? Mine had a turtle inside! I love turtles, so this was kind of awesome. I still thinks it's ridiculous that a toy like this is banned, but semi-automatic weapons aren't. But that's not what this blog is about. :)
